Would-Be Diary

Faded Glory 27 DEC 2005

We pre-booked the Holiday Inn St Pete’s Beach. We had been there before, so we knew more or less what to expect. The rate was too good to turn down.

The Hotel is a ten story building with a rotating restaurant at the top which boasts of ever-changing panoramic views for diners. It has seen better days, since it started life as a Hilton, the Luxury has faded.

On the ground floor a trolley of food that is served in the restaurant on the top floor is on permanent display. This is their misguided attempt to tempt the guests into dining within the hotel, but it has the opposite effect. And if you needed any further evidence of how awful the food is, guests also get to see plenty of prepared dishes as they are transported in the elevators on trolleys from the Kitchens on the Ground Floor to the Rooftop Dining Room. Guests share the same lift as theses trolleys and they will often stand waiting for a lift alongside a waiter with prepared meals that look less than appetising, and less than fresh. Gordon Ramsey should have a word with these people.

Since we were last there, they have stripped out all soft furnishings, carpets, and curtains, and the pool side bar has been closed. The current status as a Holiday Inn is about to abandoned.

Swimming in St Petersburg 28 DEC 2005

We escaped the Holiday Inn, and returned to Pas A Grille Beach which is a  narrow peninsular that is thus mercifully protected from through traffic, which otherwise dominates Florida from end to end. This small refuge from the automobile juts out into the Gulf of Mexico facing either, sunsets by way of a sandy beach on one side or a  fisherman's wharf on the other for pelican watchers and recreational fisherman from far away. We have returned to this place two Christmases in a row, so take this as a recommendation. We stayed at the Keystone Motel, a small elegant old fashioned hostel surrounding a beautiful pool, much patronised by Mrs Monk who is thus seen here in this picture doing just that.

Mrs Monk In A Swimsuit                                             7, January 2005

I have uploaded a number of photographs taken in recent weeks and Mrs Monk has previewed the chosen pictures and has decided that there are a disproportionate number of photographs taken of me and not enough of her. I pointed out that the photographs of me were integral to the narrative of the diary, and in any event they were not chosen to flatter me, as you will certainly understand if you take a look. I also pointed out the many pictures of her swimming.......  in a swimsuit. I have been instructed to remove all pictures of her except this one, or have I?
