27 October 2005 Cambrai Mosquitoes
We arrived in Cambrai and checked into the Hotel recommended by the Guardian, close enough to Matisse Museum in Le Catteau-Ca, the principal objective of this trip. The hotel was extremely comfortable and our 2nd floor room was very smart and the bathroom had a space age shower with multiple jets to excite the Monks.
Mrs Monk opened our window and we looked out on some tree tops and some birds who looked back at us, and we wondered and joked about bird flue.
That night the window remained open and as I slept, Mrs Monk who is now a Suduko junkie, tested her brain throughout the night. Her bedside table lamp attracted at least one hungry mother of all mosquitoes that she allowed to dine on my flesh at will.
My body is thus marked with multiple red glowing welts. This same thing happened this summer in another French Hotel and I also blamed Mrs Monk for opening the window on that occasion. Why me?
The Matisse Museum was fine but Les Beaux Arts Museum in Cambrai had a marvellous ancient collection of Roman artefacts including human remains. Mrs Monk was adopted and guided by an enthusiastic lady curator who advised her in great detail of what could be learnt about such remains. The highlight of the trip. Recommended. highlight of the trip. Recommended.
