7 Aug. 2005 Eastern Lodge
The historic Gardens of Eastern Lodge are located near Great Dunmow, Essex UK.
The grounds date back to 1302 In 1865 Francis Evelyn Maynard inherited the estate and a considerable income when she was just 3 years old.. She was known as Daisy and she became something of a socialite holding extravagant parties and had a notable liaison with the Prince of Wales.
However she was known for her philanthropy and her good causes, and in the twenties she tried to donate Eastern Lodge to the Labour movement. The offer was declined and she lived out her life until she died in 1938, somewhat impoverished. The grounds remain commendably un-restored and tarnished by the ravishes of time.
The house and grounds were requisitioned by the War Ministry during the last war. An air strip was added to the nearby fields from where the USAAF flew in the D Day campaign
A movie will be made about Daisy and this place some day, if it has not been done so thus far. Answers on a postcard please.
