My First Car Do You Have A Pet Name For Your Car?
This week the Guardian ran an article about the collapse of the historic American infatuation with the automobile.
This surprised me because it did not exactly concur with on our recent experience of Christmas Florida. The argument was based on the decline of the American car making giants, now bought-up by the far east manufacturers and which are also dwarfed by the ever expanding American computer giants.
So, is the average American more inclined to wax lyrical about their car, or is he or she more likely to make an emotional connection with his or her Ipod or Mobile phone?
In Britain, we are certainly inclined to make cosy and sentimental connections with inanimate objects, and with cars in particular. From Noddy and Big Wheels to Geraldine. In America they have Christine and Herbie. We name cars because we are either fond of them or despise them on an emotional or irrational level.. When a car dies or is sold, we are usually sad, even if the car has been unreliable, ....or is it just me.
Our hunch is that everyone has a story that might be headed, My First Car, and I hope to fill these pages with such stories, just for the hell of it.
Send me your story, if you think it will fit. I will also welcome photographs, music and any other media on this subject.
To kick things off, I have added the story of My First Car, and a photograph of Mrs Monk’s First Car
