Mrs. Monk's Would-be Diary, should have been written by Mrs. Monk, since she is the "Writer" in the family. However, since she is a writer only in the conceptual sense, I have undertaken to fill these pages on her behalf. If not by her, these pages will certainly be about her, and other important matters of the day
28 Mar 2004 2pm Bill Brandt Disappointing lunch at Royal Academy. Saw the newly restored rooms opened to the public for the first time, including a room where "The Origin Of The Species" was first presented by Darwin. Far to much gold gilt in those room for my taste. We also visited the Bill Brandt exhibition at the V and A. He really is the complete photographer. Not only a recorder of events and personalties, but an artist. His portraits (and nudes) are iconic. All of them are monumental in the literal sense: Dylan Thomas, Pablo Picasso, Peter Sellers, and so on. Brandt is proclaimed by the V and A, as the most important British photographer, and apparently he went to extraordinary lengths to disguise his German birthplace and German Childhood
