Black Cloud 11-Dec 05

Today's unprecedented Explosion at Hemel Hempstead was not heard in Leigh On Sea but was heard 100 miles away in Holland, it has been said.

When we set off for a Sunday drive across the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and we were not quite sure of what to make of this black cloud that funnelled across the sky. This picture was taken in the middle of the day and the bridge is some 40 miles from the explosion. The fire is expected to burn for days. There was no loss of life, but there may be consequences for the UK’s CO2 emission targets.
